CLIVAR (Climate Variability and Predictability) is a subprogramme of the World Climate Research Programme. Its objective is to understand and predict - if possible - climate variations, both natural and anthropogenic. In particular, CLIVAR wants to describe and understand the physical mechanisms responsible for climate variations on time scales ranging from seasonal to centennial.

Euroclivar was established to help implement CLIVAR in Europe. Euroclivar was supported by the European Commission under the Environment and Climate programme (1994 - 1998), contract ENV 4-CT95-0073. Euroclivar formally ended in 1999 with publication of the Euroclivar Recommendations .
