Jan Josephszoon van Goyen, 1596 - 1656

Dutch landscape painter. He studied in his native city Leiden and in Haarlem. In 1631 he settled at The Hague, where he became head of the painters' guild in 1640. He was one of the first landscape painters to sacrifice minute detail for atmospheric effect and space, and made the nuances of sky and atmosphere his primary concern.
