The KNMI-program 'HISKLIM' (HIStorical CLIMate) started at the beginning
of the year 2000 with a term of 5 to 10 years. The objective of the program
is to make historical
climate data physically accessible for both land and sea, from sources
in the Dutch language, with the highest possible temporal resolution and
of the best possible quality. In addition, the continuity of existing long
time series must be guaranteed and the original and digitized data must
be kept safely and effectively. Concretely, this means that in the
coming years much attention will be paid to making available historical
climate data in a user friendly way (data-infrastructure). Besides, a large
amount of observations will be digitized that now slumber in the archives.
Subsequently, these observations must be quality controlled, together with
existing, but not yet quality controlled, digitized observations. The climate
time series of the five principal stations (Den Helder/De Kooy, Groningen/Eelde,
De Bilt, Vlissingen en Maastricht/Beek) will be homogenized on the highest
possible temporal resolution. Furthermore, attention will be paid to data
management, archiving and protection of both digitized and non-digitized
observations. Procedures will be formulated to guarantee the continuity
of climate time series.
