- Continuation of a (former PhD) study on 'Modelling of astronomically
forced variation in (circum)-Mediterranean climate'. This is a joint project
with Dr. Frits Hilgen, Faculty of Earth Sciences, University of Utrecht.
The aim of this study is to explain the 'observed' climatic response,
which is found to be robust over the last 5 Million years.
- Collaboration with Wageningen University. A PhD study on Climate sensitivity
analysis was started in October 2001. It is a joint project with Prof.
J. Grasman. In this project we study the sensitivity of the simulated
climate to changes in model parameters of a variety of models of varying
complexity. Focus is on the identification of parameter changes that most
effectively change the frequency of occurence of circulation patterns
that dominate the regional climate. The basic idea is to use short term
integrations to identify effective parameter changes within the range
of uncertainty.
- In collaboration with Dr. Grant Branstator of the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, USA, research is conducted on atmospheric
variability on the intra-seasonal timescale. Focus is on the existence
of preferred flow structures, weather regimes, and transitions among these
in the present day climate and under different climate forcings.

Interannual to decadal variability in the South Atlantic ocean is investigated in collaboration with Prof. Edmo Campos of the oceanographic institute of USP. From 1-08-2002 to 31-07-2003 Dr. Haarsma from VO was visiting professor at USP. During that visit he investigated with a hierarchy of ocean models coupled to SPEEDY the mechanisms for the generation of the dominant patterns of coupled air-sea variability in the South Atlantic ocean. In 2004 Roberto de Almeida, a PhD student, worked at KNMI for one year. During this visit he investigated the 'pathways' in OCCHAM
- This European project embodies a complementary approach employing several
different model simulations of past conditions and synthesis and analysis
of paleoclimate data in order to validate state-of-the-art climate models.
The roles of ocean, sea-ice and vegetation feedbacks in climate change
are especially investigated. Our participation constitutes of studying
the climate of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) with the use of EcBilt-Clio,
a model of intermediate complexity. One of our main interests is the description
of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation under LGM conditions.
- In this project we study the impact of a warming world on the occurances
of extreme weather events, such as extreme storms, cold and hot spells,
droughts etc. The aim is to estimate the probability of extreme events in
the current and a possible warmer future climate. For this purpose we integrate
the Community Climate System Model (CSM) in ensemble mode for the period
1940-2080 for a business as usual scenario. The computations started on
June 1st 2003 and ended at the end of August 2003. This project is an activity
of the Netherlands Center for Climate Research (CKO)
and is sponsored by the National Computing Facilities Foundation (NCF)
for the use of supercomputer facilities, with financial support from the
Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
