WORKSHOP ON PALEODATA
AND CLIMATE MODELS
There is a growing research effort in reconstructing the climate and
its variability on various time scales for the present
interglacial period, as increasingly more high-resolution
proxy data become available. Climate models can contribute
to the reconstruction of climatic variability by e.g. deriving consistent
spatial patterns of climatic parameters or identifying key locations
of variability. At the same time, models
are an important tool for analysing mechanisms underlying the
climate system behaviour and the role of forcing factors.
GKSS (Geesthacht, Germany) and KNMI (De Bilt, The Netherlands) have
jointly convened a two-day workshop (8-9 March 1999) on paleodata and
climate models in De Bilt, The Netherlands. Focus
was on the possible contribution of models to the reconstruction
of climate and its variability on decadal to millenial timescales.
The state of the art was reviewed and discussed;
a report on the workshop has appeared.
