OPERA Software Development
The work plan of OPERA 3 includes a number of work packages which are designed to fulfil its objectives and planned tasks. Those related to software development are:

BUFR exchange software development (WP2.0)
Institute: TU-Graz Project leader: H. Paulitsch
A limited development of the OPERA BUFR software will be performed in this project. Implementation of the High and Medium priority tasks (as agreed at the last OPERA-2 meeting) in the BUFR exchange software version 2.3.

HDF5 exchange software development (WP2.1)
Institutes: KNMI, SHMI, IMGW Project leader: H. Beekhuis
Based on the results of OPERA 2, the issue of selecting appropriate technology which will enable and facilitate foreseen needs for the exchange of data and products must be carefully analyzed. Once this has been achieved, competent tools must be developed, made available, and supported for all OPERA members. In this project an in-depth analysis of foreseen requirements on exchange format, data model, and software tools. The link with the operational data hub should be considered carefully.

OPERA BUFR software maintenance (WP2.2)
Institute: TU-Graz Project leader: H. Paulitsch
Maintenance of OPERA BUFR software. User support is provided to the OPERA group and other users of the OPERA BUFR software, including commercial radar software suppliers.

BUFR table maintenance (WP2.3)
Institute: Meteo France Project leader: B. Urban
This activity includes defining new descriptors, sequences, and tables for use with OPERA BUFR software, where relevant and applicable, based on results achieved in WP 1.2 and 1.6.

Compositing software support (WP2.4)
Institute: TU-Graz Project leader: H. Paulitsch
Within the first OPERA Programme, compositing software has been developed that is available to all OPERA members. It is portable software that runs on all commonly available computer platforms. For the continuation, this work package covers the support of the software. Based on the demands of WP 2.1 and the pilot and the operational data hub, an updated compositing software, based on the present OPERA or some other compositing software, may be needed. The development work is also covered by this WP.
