Models

  • Our main model is the global atmospheric chemistry model TM. Presently we mainly apply version 5 (TM5) which has the option to use nested domains with high resolution in a limited area (zoom option).

    • Within the GEMS project, we have coupled TM5 to the ECMWF weather forecast model IFS using the PRISM coupling software for Earth system modelling; within the MACC project we are coupling TM5 using an in-line integration of chemistry modules in IFS.
    • We are involved in the development of the Earth system model EC-Earth, which is based on the ECMWF seasonal forecast model System 3. The atmospheric chemistry component of EC-Earth is based on TM5.

  • The KNMI KS trajectory model TRAJKS, based on meteorological output from the ECMWF weather forecast model.

  • Air quality forecasts are produced operationally with the LOTOS-EUROS regional air quality model. The dutch LOTOS_EUROS model is developed by TNO, RIVM, PBL and KNMI. The forecasts are used by RIVM to inform the public about air quality in the Netherlands. The results are used by the MACC project for ensemble air quality forecasts for Europe.
