Tropospheric NO2 workshop
The workshop on 'Tropospheric NO2 measured by satellites' took place from 10-12 September 2007 and was hosted by KNMI. The workshop was supported by the EU project ACCENT/Troposat-II. Approximately 50 scientists working on tropospheric NO2 participated in the workshop.

The objective of the workshop was to assess the quality of tropospheric NO2 products from the various atmospheric chemistry satellite instruments (GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI, GOME-2).
More specifically it intended to address and answer the following questions:

  • how accurate can tropospheric NO2 be derived from GOME, SCIAMACHY, OMI, and GOME-2?
  • how accurate should the tropospheric NO2 from satellites be for the use in various applications (air quality monitoring, air quality forecast, long-range transport, cross-boundary fluxes, emission inventories, ...) ?
  • what are the error sources in the NO2 retrievals, and how can they be minimized?
  • what methods and measurements can be used for the validation of tropospheric NO2?
  • how can the tropospheric NO2 data sets from different instruments be combined?

The workshop was open for all scientists working on retrieval and validation of tropospheric NO2 columns from the different satellites and for scientists using these tropospheric NO2 products in models and applications.

Programme
The final programme and abstracts are available. The workshop was organised in 4 sessions: validation, retrieval, modelling, and applications, with both invited and solicited talks. A large portion of the time was allocated to discussions.
