Data services

The R&D Infrastructure group has been responsible for developing expert systems that process satellite and model based datasets into consumable products for in- and external customers ranging from atmospheric scientists to operational weather forecasters, model centers and space agencies.

The interest of the group regarding Data Services is focused on all aspects that make the services efficient and reliable. This within the international collaboration context of data production and dissemination. The main research and development activities are:

  • Concurrent handling of a multitude of data sources,
  • Production of higher order data products by user defined and flexible processing rules,
  • Robust archiving strategies with integrity and recuperative capabilities,
  • Dissemination of higher order products to portal services,
  • Connection to and chaining of different data services via standard protocols,
  • Operator interfaces and tools.
All aspects are being researched in the context of the operational system requirements stated by KNMI and external data exchange parties. To facilitate data production and dissemination with more than 99% availability, fail safe reaction to internal and external anomaly occurrences must be key requirement during overall design and development. The group has expert knowledge on redundancy strategies, transaction models and workload management.
