Location and source mechanism of induced earthquakes
The borehole network, designed to detect and locate earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 1.5 around the gas fields, allows to locate these events with an accuracy of 0.5-1km. Depth resolution is worse, at best an accuracy of 2 km can be reached. Research on location is focused on improving the resolution by taking into account local structure and looking for the detection of converted phases and multiples. In addition to regional studies, also an active participation in microseismic monitoring started, observing earthquakes of magnitudes between -3 and -1.
Source- mechanisms and parameters (e.g. stress-drop) have been retrieved for the larger events and, since the network is sparse, also have a large uncertainty. Studies in waveform modeling are foreseen. Mechanisms are of special importance as input to geomechanical studies of these reservoirs, as carried out by, e.g., TNO.
