Seismic Hazard Natural Tectonic events
The Netherlands is an area of low seismicity. The southern part has a history of occasional damaging eathquakes,
the most recent being the 1992 ML=5.8 Roermond event with an estimated damage of 100MEuro. In history, e.g.
1755-1756, we find similar damaging earthquakes in the Roer Valley Graben area, which also covers parts of Belgium
and Germany. This is the motivation for hazard assessment of this area, in international collaboration.
Applied research is focussed on the (historical) seismicity in the area, zonation, attenuation, source parameters
and development and/or evaluation of hazard models.
