IMPROBUS

Improved use of high-resolution observations (MSO project)

Brief description of project:  More frequent analysis updates in the present operational meso-scale HARMONIE suite will provide the possibility to better follow extreme weather features and to signal their occurrence at an earlier stage, because more recent observations are being processed. In this proposal we will investigate how the current data assimilation technique can be adapted in order to better cope with the availability of many observations with high spatio-temporal resolution, like RADAR, Mode-S EHS, scatterometer. Besides increasing the analysis update frequency, another promising strategy  is to consider the 4DVAR data assimilation technique. We will explore how well 4DVAR copes in a highly nonlinear environment like HARMONIE

Example of the coverage forone of the observation sets explored in this project: Mode_S EHS observations (wind and temperature)
