Workshop on land-atmosphere coupling aspects in land data assimilation and SVAT parameter estimationDe Bilt, 19 and 20 April 2002 Convened by Bart van den Hurk and Paul Houser Co-sponsored by GEWEX and KNMI |
ContextThe Global Land-Atmosphere System Study panel (residing under auspices of GEWEX) will organize a workshop dealing with land-atmosphere coupling, aiming at a review of current expertise and the design of an experimental set-up in which the significance of land-atmosphere coupling for data assimilation and/or SVAT development studies can be defined or even quantified. The workshop is convened by Bart van den Hurk (KNMI, The Netherlands) and Paul Houser (NASA, USA). Partly in the context of ISLSCP and PILPS a number of projects have been initiated focusing on updating information on the state of the land surface using near-realtime data assimilation of (remote sensing) observations in (often stand-alone) land surface modules (see e.g. the LDAS homepage). Furthermore, inspired by the significance of the land surface component in weather and climate systems, calibration and evaluation of land surface models in PILPS-like studies is an ongoing effort. At the workshop we would particularly like to make an inventory of how atmosphere-land feedback processes should and could be incorporated in these studies. A number of people with relevant experience in the field of land data assimilation, SVAT parameter estimation, land observations or coupled land-atmosphere modelling have been invited to give a presentation. In addition, group discussions will be organized aiming at the definition of future research into land-atmosphere coupling aspects in land data assimilation and SVAT-calibration. The workshop will be held on Friday 19 and Saturday 20 April 2002, the weekend prior to the EGS-conference. Workshop hours will be 9:00 - 18:00 on Friday, and 9:00 - 16:00 on Saturday. The Friday sessions are devoted to the presentations, the Saturday is reserved for workshop group discussions. Venue of the workshop is Motel De Biltse Hoek in De Bilt (The Netherlands), which is less than 1,5 hours away from the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Further links: |
