In the table below the grid as agreed on the kick-off meeting is specified. However, the western zone contains no land data except Iceland, and a reduced grid is also proposed.

As is described in the grid discussion, production of soil moisture will be carried out on a rotated lat/lon grid by at least DWD. The parameters of that grid are defined in the table below.

Physiographic data

Climate files have been generated for a suite of grids and from a suite of originating land use data bases. The table below gives an overview and provides links to the climate files (in HIRLAM grib format: normal grib + one header record, to be ignored).

Leaf area index and vegetation cover from ECOCLIMAP

Land surface schemes have different use of vegetation parameters such as derived from ECOCLIMAP. ISBA and TESSEL use spatial distributed fields of LAI and vegetation cover, whereas TESSEL uses a look-up table of (monthly varying) values per vegetation type. The fields of LAI and total vegetation cover included in the climate files are directly taken from the ECOCLIMAP database. Below a table is included for monthly values of LAI and Cveg for TESSEL vegetation types. These were defined by averaging the ECOCLIMAP values for all grid boxes where the vegetation types were present. However, since some vegetation types (e.g. evergreen needleleaf forest) are present in a wide range of Europe and the leaf area index varies waidely accross the territory, the spatial distribution of LAI derived for TESSEL may differ significantly from the spatially distributed ECOCLIMAP data.
