From Amsterdam airport (Schiphol) to Utrecht Central Station

From 6:44 until 23:44 there is a train service from Schiphol to Utrecht, at approximately a 15 minutes interval. A ticket costs € 7,80 (2nd) or € 13,20 (1st class). The journey takes approximately 32 minutes.
At 0:14 there is a train, but you will have to change at Duivendrecht station. From 01:00 to 05:00 there is a train at every full hour. Journey time of these services is approximately 53 minutes.
Taxis cost € 55 to Utrecht, € 65 to De Bilt (KNMI or hotel de Biltsche Hoek), if pre-booked (see the external links).

From Utrecht Central Station to the hotel

If you travel by bus, read "How to pay for a bus ride".

  • To hotel Mitland:
A frequent local bus service, line 4, leaving from the "station Stadsbussen" at Utrecht Central station (map) will take you to bus stop "Oorsprongpark". From there, walk for 10 minutes (map). Total journey time is 20 minutes. Note: at the busstation, take bus 4 in the direction Burg. Fockema Andreaelaan. See the external links for a map of the busstation Stadsbussen.
From busstop "Oorsprongpark" walk slightly further, turn left across the railway and follow the "Buys Ballotstraat" (easy to remember;-). Turn right at the end of the road, go through a tunnel and find the hotel on your right.
    A taxi will cost approximately € 15.

  • To hotel de Biltsche Hoek:
There is a frequent bus service (numbers 50, 52, 53, or 74), leaving from the "Streekbus station" at Utrecht Central station.
The hotel has its own bus stop (called "Biltse Hoek"), but it is on the wrong side of the road. You may choose to get off at the next stop ("Amersfoortse weg"), cross the road and take the bus back, or leave the bus at the previous stop ("Tunneltje"), and walk from there (15 minutes). Total journey time is 20 minutes for the first of these options, 30 minutes for the second.
From busstop "Tunneltje" walk slightly further, turn right and left to go through a little tunnel, turn right at the end of the road, cross at the traffic lights and continue straight on until the Biltsche Hoek is on your right.
    A taxi will cost approximately € 30.

  • To other hotels:
    Seek assistance (see below).

To the meeting places

If you travel by bus, read "How to pay for a bus ride".

  • To the Centraal Museum: (map) The museum is opposite bus stop "Centraal Museum'" on local Utrecht bus number 2. This is a circular line. From Utrecht Central Station the ride time is 15 minutes.
From hotel Mitland take local bus 4; and from hotel de Biltsche Hoek take a bus number 50, 52, 53, or 74; to Utrecht Central Station, and change to the circular bus number 2 at the stop "Janskerkhof" (cross the road there). The journey will take you approximately 30 minutes in total. From bus stop "Janskerkhof" you may decide to walk (1.3 km) (map), rather than wait for bus 2 to arrive.
From busstop "Janskerkhof" walk South (which is left to the bus if it came from Mitland or De Bilt). Turn right at the end of the road, and left again. You are now between the Dom church and the Dom tower. Continue across the square, straight on, turn right at the end of the road, and find the museum on your left.
From hotel Mitland you can walk the whole way (map).
  • To KNMI: From Utrecht, take bus number 50, 52, 53, or 74, and walk for 5 minutes from bus stop "Tunneltje".
From busstop "Tunneltje" walk slightly further, turn right, cross a bridge, turn right, first left, and walk into the KNMI grounds.
From the hotels Mitland (25 minutes) and Biltsche Hoek (15 minutes) you may want to walk to KNMI.

How to pay for a bus ride

You can buy the ticket you need on the bus. However, it is cheaper to buy a "strippenkaart" in advance, e.g. from many a kiosk at the Central Station. A ticket with 15 strips costs € 7.30. You will need to stamp, or ask the driver to stamp, two strips for travel within Utrecht, and three for journeys between Utrecht and de Bilt. The ticket will remain valid for one hour within the area it is stamped for. So you may change buses without buying a new ticket; just show the stamped ticket to the bus driver. Two or more people can travel on the same ticket, but of course each will need the appropriate number of strips stamped.

We bike

The distances that you will have to travel between hotel, meeting places, and Utrecht city centre are such that the locals would do them by bicycle, unless the weather is very, very bad, or the physical condition does not allow it. Biking is safe, fast, healthy, and easy. You may want to consider to rent a bike (approximately € 7 per day, with a deposit of € 50). See the external links for addresses.
