From here the three buildings of the KNMI to enter. On the square is an impression made of the weather map for November 13, 1972, the day a heavy storm pulled Netherlands. The main building was opened in 2000.
Main building, Front (via Weather Square)
Customers and the relationships of the KNMI come in at the reception. In the time that they wait until they met for their appointment, they can just sit and look at the information screens.
Main building, Computer Room (via Reception)
KNMI has a large plant with numerous computer data. Every day here is about 1500 GB of inbound data processed into 'quality' information. Data storage is a tape-robot available which total almost 120,000 Gigabyte (equivalent to approximately 100 million floppy disks) of data can be stored without human intervention.
Main building, Weather Room (via Reception)
In the weather room meteorologists make weather forecasts and warnings for the general public, aviation and shipping. The meteorologist is behind a 'meteorological workstation'.
Wing, Workshop (via Weather Square)
In the mechanical and electronic workshop of the KNMI meteorological instruments are maintained and repaired. The wing, which also houses the majority of climate researchers, dates from 1970 and renovated in 2000.
Historic Villa, Seismological Lobby (via Weather Square)
The Seismology Division is housed in the restored ancient villa. The villa is nicknamed The Monastery because here in the 12th century a monastery was established. In this villa the KNMI in 1897 took up residence. This villa is partly restored in its original state.
