"Monsoon Clouds (Frans Lanting)"
My main interest is in the study of climate change and the interrelationships with air quality, primarily using ground based remote sening techniques at the Cabauw Experimental Site for Atmospheric Research (CESAR) in the Netherlands.
Integrating in-situ and ground based measurements with space borne earth observation, broadens the perspective to larger scales. I am motivated to link stations like CESAR into coherent networks for atmospheric monitoring.
I have ample experience in development of, exploitation of, and research with various optical sensing techniques for minor atmospheric constituents, with emphasis on LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). Applications of my work include profiling of tropospheric ozone, clouds, aerosols and water vapour.
Current Activities
- Application of tropospheric profiling techniques for climate and air quality studies and climate monitoring (e.g. ACTRIS, PEGASOS, GRUAN)
- Member of the iSPEX team - measure aerosols with your smartphone
- Member of the GRUAN Working Group
- Vice chair of the WMO - CIMO Expert Team on New Technologies and Testbeds
- Aerosol Profile Retrieval Concept Development and Validation for Sentinel-4
- TROPOMI team for Copernicus (previously called GMES) Level 2 data products.
Previous Work
- Development of Caeli - CESAR Water Vapour, Aerosol and Cloud lidar
- Development of tropO3 - a differential absorption lidar for profiling of tropospheric ozone
