Global Geopotential Height fields from GPS RO
Objective :Derivation and validation of geopotential height, temperature and humidity maps for a number of pressure levels with know resolution and accuracy.Rationale :To date most geopotential height data have been based on radiosonde observations. A large drawback of this type of observation is that it is not uniformly distributed over the globe. Especially over the oceans radiosonde observations are sparse. Furthermore a large variety of radiosonde types with their specific error characteristics are deployed. This results in a inhomogeneous set of observations with respect to accuracy.
Data from GPS RO are evenly distributed over the globe and are calibration free, overcoming the problems with radiosonde observations.
