PRISM standard name tables

Discussion points:

  1. Is there a PRISM convention for heat and radiation fluxes (positive=downward?)?
  2. Does downward in the CF convention indeed indicate the direction of the +-direction?
  3. Should PRISM decide on preference for geopotential or geopotential_height?
  4. Evaporation does not include sublimation (evaporation of ice)?
  5. Always use downward in standard names for stresses?
  6. Standardize units for precipitation and evaporation (kgm-2s-1, or lwe=m/s)? i.e. Do we prefer precipitation_flux or precipitation_rate?
  7. Does PRISM allow for PSU (Practical Salinity Units) for salinity variables?

 

Notes:

  1. This will probably be an effort that will need to on for some time. We are not yet close to a complete standard set.
  2. italic standard names still need to be proposed to and accepted by the international CF group.
  3. bold standard names and plot parameters require confirmation by PRISM participants.
  4. Units in ()s are those supplied by the institution, except fraction which is in the std_name table. Only units with a standard Name supplied have been checked. Units in CF are canonical ! A scaling factor can be specified in the netcdf file !
  5. In principle all diagnostics are included. However, not all coupling fields are included yet, only those written by ECHAM.
  6. I have included a reference to the categories distinguished in the CF documentation (for easier checking): These CF standard name tables contain links to more extensive definitions of each standard_name, which is useful for identifying the right standard name for our purpose.
  7. The last 4 columns in the tables below were added to allow definition of default plotting scales in the PRISM visualisation software. The default plotting scales may be identified using the information in the netCDF header (CF standard name etc.) but will likely not be part of the netCDF header themselves.
