Atmospheric chemistry modelling activities
- The Chemistry Transport Model TM is (co-)developed by our group.
- Chemical data assimilation techniques are applied to reconstruct past atmospheric composition and for emission inversions (mostly based on satellite observations).
- A recent development is air quality modelling for the Netherlands. We are cooperating with TNO, RIVM and PBL to improve national air quality forecasts. For this the Lotos-Euros model is applied.
- Earth system modelling:
I have participated in the EU-PRISM project that created a software infrastructure for Earth system modelling. The PRISM software has been applied to couple TM with models of the atmospheric general circulation, such as ECHAM and recently to ECMWF in the EU-GEMS, EU-MACC and EC-earth projects.
I coordinated the definition of CF standard names for PRISM. This is now being further pursued by Christiane Textor and others within the framework of HTAP and GEMS (see wiki page).
KNMI has recently started the development of an earth system model (EC-earth) in cooperation with external partners from the Netherlands and Europe.
- Stratosphere-troposphere exchange and the Brewer-Dobson circulation are old interests of mine.
We recently analysed the circulation in the ECMWF 45 year re-analysis (ERA40) in depth by performing age-of-air calculations with the TM transport model and our trajectory model. Improvement of meteorological assimilation schemes with regard to this has our vivid attention.
