A historic record of sea ice extents from scatterometer data

A consistent record of sea ice extents and ice age from scatterometer data from 1991 to the present.

Our goal is the generation and public release of a consistent record of sea ice extents and ice age from scatterometer data (ERS, Quikscat and ASCAT) from 1991 to present. This record complements the standard series of sea ice concentrations derived from passive microwaves by providing enhanced discrimination of older (thicker) sea ice types during the winter, and better sensitivity to melting sea ice conditions typically found in the Arctic during the summer months and the Antarctic sea ice margin all year round.
