Simulations with the Lidar Performance Analysis Simulator (LIPAS), conducted in realistic atmospheric scenes including clouds and aerosols, show that the quality of Aeolus Mie and Rayleigh winds change with changing slant (or look) angle. In preparation for EPS-Aeolus, also denoted as Aeolus-2, it was found that a slant angle in the range of 40-44 degrees will increase the quality of EPS-Aeolus winds compared to a 35 degrees slant angle used for Aeolus. This is true in particular in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere where it was found that Aeolus has largest impact in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP).
