In October 1944 the then German control during the Second World War of KNMI was transferred from the “Luftwaffe”, the German Air Force, to the “Kriegsmarine”, the German Navy (Wallbrink et al., 2000). In the period December 1944 January 1945, the Germans confiscated nearly all of KNMI’s marine meteorological and oceanographical ship logbooks from the institute’s archives, covering the period 1854-1938. Also punch cards and associated equipment were taken to Greifswald, situated in northeast Germany
