Speakers: Lone Mokkenstorm, Weather and Climate Services and Sjoukje Philip, R&D Weather and Climate Modelling

KNMI is collaborating with the Norwegian, German and British weather services on a new international project, which includes the establishment of an Operational Attribution Office (OAO) for extreme weather climate attribution. Staff from this service monitor global extreme weather events, whether occurring or expected, and can now analyze them within a few days, combining multiple lines of evidence using observations and climate models including probabilistic methods and circulation analogues as well as evidence from literature. This allows rapid assessment of climate change’s role in extreme weather events, and this knowledge can help governments and organizations to better prepare for future extremes. This talk will give an overview of the project, the tools and techniques that are used and the key lessons learned.
