Aviation guarantees mobility over long distances. Aviation also contributes to climate change by currently around 5% of the anthropogenic warming. Aviation emissions include CO2, NOx, H2O, and particles, which alter the chemical composition of the atmosphere and which impact the radiation budget (CO2, H2O, O3, CH4, soot, sulphate aerosols, contrails). More than 50% of the aviation's climate impact stems from non-CO2 emissions. These mechanisms will be presented and special emphasis will be given to current research concerning possibilities to mitigate the climate impact via changes in routing or aircraft and engine design.
